Keratopigmentation
- Flaak Method (Keratopigmentation)
The treatment process for keratopigmentation to change eye color
Before any treatment for keratopigmentation (plaque), a complete diagnosis is first performed to rule out any contraindications. After that, the procedure itself lasts about 30 minutes for both eyes, and does not require hospitalization, as it is performed on an outpatient basis. In addition, the treatment is performed under local anesthesia using numbing eye drops, so the procedure does not involve pain. As a result, the patient can return to normal activities and work the very next day.
Two steps
The Visumax laser allows a microchannel to be created in the corneal layer of the eye, using two approaches, and completely automatically, for the purpose of inserting the pigment. Initially, this stage lasts about ten seconds for each eye, and it is interesting to note that it does not put any pressure on the eye.
The surgeon then injects the pigment needed to color the cornea into the microchannel, thus covering the natural eye color. In addition, the pigment is evenly distributed while working on areas of different density, to create as natural an appearance as possible. Furthermore, at the edges, as in a natural eye, a darker limbal ring is intentionally left unpigmented, in order to give the eye depth and contrast.
To ensure the success of the procedure, a first examination is performed the day after the surgery. Additionally, another follow-up examination is performed three months later, to assess the final result.
However, it should be noted that the side effects and possible complications are similar to those known from laser vision correction procedures.
- Eye color change
Results of keratopigmentation
The change in eye color is visible immediately at the end of the procedure. However, the final result is only obtained after a few weeks. During this period, a natural process of partial absorption of the pigment occurs, which creates a gentle “scrubbing” effect. As a result, over time the appearance becomes more and more natural.
Additionally, if the intensity or color of the pigment fades over time, you may consider a “touch-up” to restore the eyes to their shine and vibrancy.
